Building A Capsule Wardrobe
I first decided to switch to a capsule wardrobe after I would spend wasted time each morning frustrated with my choices of clothing. I also had tons of outdated pieces and pieces that were to big or too small. I wanted to feel good about what I was wearing and be ready for any occasion. After a year of creating a capsule wardrobe for each season I am in love with it. It cuts down on laundry and indecision.

Now I am on my second year of using a capsule wardrobe and I loved that I could pull out my summer wardrobe and I only needed to update two tops. Everything still fit and was basic enough that I only had to add in two new tops to keep it fresh. Your ultimate Goal with a Capsule Wardrobe is to create outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable.
Capsule Wardrobe – A wardrobe consisting of 7-10interchangeable outfits varying by the season. Each seasonal wardrobe should have basic pieces ( pants, shorts, etc.) that you can interchange throughout the year.
Creating Your First Capsule Wardrobe
1. Clean Out Your Closet – To Narrow down your clothing you need to do the following:
A. Anything that doesn’t fit to small or too large gets donated or sold online.
B. Any clothing that you haven’t worn or you don’t feel confident in goes in the same donated/sold.
C. Looking at what is left separate the clothing into seasons. Fall, Winter, Spring, & Summer.
D. Take inventory of each season.
2. Build Your Wardrobe –
A. Start with the Season we are currently in and put away the other seasons into a bin or in the back of the closet.
B. If you work outside of the home you need to have 5 interchangeable work outfits, and 2 to 3 casual outfits.
C. Begin Laying out your clothing and mix and matching items that can make up different outfits throughout the week.
D. If you’re missing pieces then I recommend making a list and selling some of your other clothing to cover the cost.
3. Goal For Your Wardrobe
A. 4-5 bottoms (not including a couple bottoms for the gym)
B. 5-7 Tops
C. 3-4 Accessories ( Scarves, necklaces, earrings)
D. 2 pairs of shoes ( casual & dressy)
Note : My Wardrobe looks like the following for summer
A. Bottoms : 4 shorts, 1pair of Jean Capris and 1 pair of dressy Kahki Capris , 2 yoga Capris
B. Tops : 3 camis ( 2 white & 1 Black) , 4 Tops that mix and match with my bottoms, 2 workout shirts
C. Shoes : Sperry boat shoes, Sandals, and my running shoes
D. Accessories: 2 earrings I interchange and 2 necklaces I interchange
E. Swimsuit & Swimsuit Coverup
4. Double Check Your Wardrobe – Once you have assembled everything together now is the time to mix and match and have fun. If done right you should be able to create multiple different outfits with your pieces of clothing.
Note : Things to keep in mind as you assemble your wardrobe (pick a style, choose a color palette, Add texture or a print with your basics, add the extras, select the shoes and accessories)
I personally loved having a capsule wardrobe that I had my whole family switch to a capsule wardrobe. Everyone in my house now has a capsule wardrobe and it makes everything so much smoother. The other great thing about having a capsule wardrobe is it saves me from clothing shopping and I can invest in quality pieces as well. If I come across a new outfit I love ….I make sure it fits into my wardrobe and it replaces a current piece in my wardrobe.
